Resources
There are many resources for the DeafBlind as well as for family, friends, and employers of deaf-blind. These sources are at the state and national levels.
Below are resources that can help Deaf-Blind consumers. Information comes from state and national sources
North Carolina Resources
- Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DSDHH)Part of the state agency NCDHHS (Health and Human Services). Provides assistance for the deaf and hard of hearing as well as the deaf-blind. DSDHH works for independent living and gives assistance with advocacy as well. There are 7 regional centers over the state.
- Division of Services for the Blind (DSB)Part of the state agency NCDHHS (Health and Human Services). Provides assistance for the blind as well as the deaf-blind. Coordinates with Vocational Rehabilitation (Voc Rehab or VR) to provide help with job related issue. There are 7 district offices to cover the state with Deaf-Blind Specialists in
- Disability Rights of North Carolina 501(c)(3) non-profit that provides people with disabilities all over NC help with advocacy and legal assistance at no charge. It is a federally mandated organization to help protect the rights of NC citizens who are disabled.
- RelayNC
- North Carolina Assistive Technology Program (NCATP) NCATP offers equipment for qualifying deaf, blind, and Deaf-Blind consumers.
- The North Carolina Office of Exceptional Children works to ensure that students (K-12) with disabilities develop intellectually, physically, emotionally, and vocationally through the provision of an appropriate individualized education program in the least restrictive environment.
- DeafBlind Model Classroom Resources Resource for educators with case studies, charts, and more.
National Resources
- Helen Keller National Center (HKNC)
- National Deaf-Blind Equipment Distribution Program (NDBEDP) Federal program through the FCC to assist qualifying Deaf-Blind residents of the United States to receive equipment to assist with communication.
- Information and Technical Assistance on the Americans with disabilities Act Provides good information on what the ADA covers.
- Emergency Preparedness Resource from American Association of the DeafBlind (AADB) with important information for Deaf-Blind on being prepared for an emergency.
